Trisha Deery

Trisha Deery (Deery, 2013) is an illustrator based in Co. Londonderry/Derry in Northern Ireland. Deery is one of the first authors and illustrators to be published in Ireland. Her book is all about ‘Miss Rosie Red’ and it is called “Let Me See…What Will I Be?” . This is a beautifully illustrated children’s book. Deery holds on to her hand drawn and hand coloured images. There is still an organic and sketchy feel captured throughout the book. This brings Deerys characters to life and gives them a warm and cuddly feel. Her story is simple and easy to follow. The characters are likable and it is easy to relate to the main character ‘Miss Rosie Red’. Deery is very careful to not illustrate what she writes. Her images are crystal clear. They display what is going on in the story without using any words. This is an important trait to have as an illustrator. It is important to show the story through pictures rather than words. Deery works with Dog Ears, a Londonderry/Derry based publishing company who helped her publish her book and create an application for her book. They are currently in the process of creating an animation of ‘Miss Rosie Red’ (Dog Ears 2012). Deery also designs greeting cards. Again she uses hand drawn images. Her style is transparent here. The characters are very similar to Rosie. They are cute and very childlike. There is a feeling of joy in these images. One expresses love. The little girl is giving the little boy a hug. There is a feeling of friendship and companion ship here that the onlooker can clearly see. The card titled “Let It Snow” could be a reminiscent image about growing up when there is snow in the garden. Everyone gets together to build a snow man. It has a warm, happy Christmassy essence.
There is something very refreshing about the work Deery does. She creates simple family scenes and sweet, lovable characters. Her natural, rough hand drawn style is full of life and personality. She is an inspirational artist. Her work appears to be personal and heart felt. This gives her product a special and natural feel.
